GRAND LAKE FIREWORKS, INC (formerly the Disney Fireworks Show of 2009) is geared up for Saturday night, July 3rd, 2010’s “Spectacular Fireworks Show” along about dusk (9:00 to 9:30 pm). . A media event as well as a community celebration, the Grand Lake Fireworks Show will be simulcast on KITO 96.1 FM so tune in your radios starting at 5:00 p.m. on the 3rd of July. The fireworks show can be viewed at the new GRDA Visitors Center in Langley, the Pensacola Dam, 3 Cherokee State Parks near the Spillways, on the water in the main channel of Grand Lake, and all along the shores of South Grand Lake.

Barges are in order and South Grand Lakers are filled with anticipation and excitement.  Signs are going up throughout Grand Lake, advertising and press releases galore, radio broadcasts, interviews, commercials airing on six different radio stations, and the Board of Directors are meeting sometimes until the wee hours to make this event memorable.  The Grand Lake Fireworks Show has some surprises in store for this year for the literally thousands of spectators that viewed the public display last year.

The Board Members of the GRAND LAKE FIREWORKS, INC. include Judy Barger, Donna Bohnenstiel, Debby Harwood, Helen Hunt, Jennifer Jeffers, Janet Link, Marilyn Monical, Betsy Parker, Dr. Melissa Whiting Zacame and Chip Barger who are individual volunteers from the South Grand Lake communities.  We wanted to be able to provide to the public a place to view a SPECTACULAR FIREWORKS SHOW on land and the waters of a large body of water, the main lake of the beautiful GRAND LAKE O’ THE CHEROKEES where there is an abundance of room for boats and land galore!  After all, this is the Birthday of the United States of America.  As we are celebrating this historic holiday of the United States of America, it’s just one more opportunity to celebrate in our hearts the thankfulness of belonging to such a God Given Lake at our finger tips and showing our pride in our communities and our lands of the lake.

We are all extremely grateful for all your generous donations that we have received, and we are looking forward to this “extraordinary and “remarkable” GRAND LAKE FIREWORKS SHOW!!!

Why Do We Celebrate July 4th?

As we are preparing for the 4th of July celebration, Grand Lake Fireworks, Inc. would like to remind everyone about the true meaning of this holiday, which is the celebration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. If you have not read the Declaration of Independence in a while, it is still as relevant today as it was in 1776.

One of the most famous lines of the Declaration of Independence is:

We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

We are so thankful that we have the Liberty, (FREEDOM) to bring a few minutes of Happiness into your Lives.

Grand Lake Fireworks, Inc. believes that everyone in, on and around Grand Lake, residents and visitors, should be able to enjoy the 4th of July with a fireworks show. Our mission statement is as follows:

Grand Lake Fireworks Incorporated is an organization made up of individual volunteers from the South Grand Lake area. Its purpose is to provide and produce an annual fireworks display around the 4th of July to celebrate the birthday of the United States of America, and to show pride in the community.

Grand Lake Fireworks, Inc. brings together the resources of the South Grand Lake area that include area businesses, civic organizations, visitors, families and individuals who sponsor the fireworks event.

Grand Lake Fireworks Fast Approaching!

GRAND LAKE FIREWORKS SATURDAY JULY 3rd

July 4th weekend will draw thousands of people to the shores of Grand Lake and AM Pyrotechnics, LLC has promised to provide Grand Lakers a spectacular fireworks show on July 3rd, 2010. AM Pyrotechnics was the winner of the Judges Grand Award for Artistic Excellence at the 2004 and 2009 PGI (Pyrotechnics International) conventions. Owner Aaron Mayfield was also awarded with the 2009 Rising Star of Innovation and Entrepreneurship from Missouri Center, a statewide recognition for his diligence, creativity and business development success. The Missouri Senate and House of Representatives also passed resolutions (SR-115 and HR-219) to applaud Aaron for his success. We are looking forward to a great fireworks show from Aaron and his crew.

The Fireworks show will take place at dusk and will be held between the two spillways on the water in Disney. This is a great opportunity for you to get together with family and friends and barbeque, swim, boat, check out the new Visitors Center and take a tour of the Pensacola Dam. Good locations to watch the fireworks show are the new Visitors Center in Langley, the Pensacola Dam-Langley & Disney, the three Cherokee State Parks-two by the spillways and the one by Pensacola Dam in Disney, on the water in the main channel of Grand Lake, or take the Cherokee Queen.

Grand Lake Fireworks Inc. is still taking donations for the show. For every $100.00 that is donated we can add another 8 inch mortar. The picture above is of a plaque that was purchased from the old owners of Rogers Cabins in Disney.  Based on research done in the area by the owner of the plaque, it is estimated that this advertisement dates to some time around the completion of the dam, the exact date has been difficult to pinpoint.

It looks like it was a festive, event filled weekend, culminating in “the most dazzling fireworks display scheduled in Oklahoma”.  Sounds like 4th of July weekend, 2010 to us!

Everyone associated with Grand Lake Fireworks would like to take a moment and offer a sincere Thank You to the Grand River Dam Authority.

GRDA makes it possible for all of the fun we all have on and around Grand Lake.  And, you know what, they are not in business to babysit all of us lake users, but that is exactly what they do.  And, whether you realize it or not, all of us that use and enjoy Grand Lake need a little baby sitting!

This is a tremendous playground those of us lucky enough to live here have in our backyard and it is GRDA that makes it all possible.  They provide the patrols, rules and safety that we all need to ensure that our time on the lake is as safe and fun as possible.  And when one of us lake users screws up or has a problem out on the water, who is there to help?  That’s right, it’s GRDA.

So, again, from all of us associated with Grand Lake Fireworks, THANK YOU to GRDA for providing the safe and fun boating and lake environment that we have all taken for granted!

The 4th of July should be a day of fun and celebration, but it is also one of the most dangerous days of the year. You can keep your Independence Day fun and safe when you follow the proper safety tips. Whatever your plans are for this holiday, be sure you remember these safety tips.

1. Remember the importance of fireworks safety: Fireworks are illegal in most cities and they are a fire hazard. Outside city zones where you are allowed to use fireworks, there is still the danger of fire and also of bodily injury. Always read all instructions properly and do not use near wooded or dry areas.

2. Always have water available to put out any sparks or flame that may occur when using fireworks.

3. Never point fireworks at people.

4. Do not allow children to play with fireworks or firecrackers.

5. Don’t drink and drive. Always have a designated driver and don’t let your friends drive drunk.

6. Be extra cautious on the road. Even if you are not drinking, other people can be. Drivers also become distracted by fireworks and other excitement in the area. Be extra cautious if you must be on the road this weekend, especially at night.

7. Be careful during barbecues that you do not start a fire. Be sure all coals are completely out before leaving the barbecue unattended. Be cautious of children playing around the barbecue area.

8. Store food properly to avoid food poisoning. Be careful of leaving food out- especially in the heat.

9. Remember to drink responsibly and to serve foods at the proper temperature.

10. Also, if you have pets, remember pet safety too. Don’t let your beloved pet become a casualty this 4th of July.

Statistics show that over 7,000 people each year get treated for 4th of July related accidents. Don’t be one of them. Stay safe this year.

Great Big Thank You to Smokin Bones BBQ!

The BBQ fundraiser on March 13 in Disney was a huge success! Thanks to everyone that stopped by. We actually ran out of food and a great time was had by all.

We are planning our next fundraiser for the 2nd week of May. This will include BBQ, a silent auction and horseshoe tournament. All the fun will take place at the Lighthouse Supper Club parking lot. Keep checking Grand Lake Fireworks for all of the details.
